Laser Eye Surgery: Why Canada?
Canadian Laser Eye surgeons, Drs. Mullie and Balazsi are leading eye surgeons and among the most experienced Lasik surgeons in the world. Our Montreal, Canada clinic uses only the most advanced equipment - in some cases more advanced than that available in the United States. Data from LASIK cases performed at Laservue formed over one third of the eyes evaluated by the FDA for the approval of the Bausch & Lomb Keracor 217 laser in the US. Our current latest technology is called "Thin Flap Lasik" using the Zeiss Mel 80 excimer laser.
Canada is a Leader in Surgical Technology Usage
Owing to slightly different government regulatory approval processes, Canadian eye surgeons have slightly earlier access to newer technologies than surgeons from the United States. This means that Canadian surgeons can be experienced in the most advanced technologies ahead of their US colleagues.
Since 1992 our doctors have performed over 75,000 laser refractive surgeries including over 70,000 Lasik cases. Most clinics have only one laser, whereas Montreal-based Laservue has four lasers, so that only a top-working laser is being used at any time even if one needs servicing.
Excimer laser surgery is safe and yields the highest percentage of excellent results when 2 surgeon-dependent criteria are satisfied:
- An experienced surgeon with a consistent technique performed on a daily basis.
- An experienced surgeon who immediately recognizes any irregularity in laser performance. Lasik eye surgery machines are like finely-tuned Formula 1 cars, and should not be used when not in top working order, even if surgery has to be delayed for 24 hours.
Even if you choose not to come to Laservue in Montreal for your surgery, make sure that your surgery is performed by an experienced surgeon: our doctors have taught more than 50 Canadian and American surgeons the intricacies of the procedure, and have seen them evolve to a good technique which yields consistent and reproducible results.
Only after thousands of cases does a doctor become a true expert. Remember, a perfectly honed technique is vital to the success of the procedure - the technology is important, but surgical technique and experience are also crucial.
Technology PRK and LASIK with the excimer laser have been performed worldwide since 1990.
In Canadian laser eye surgery clinics, new medical technology can be introduced as long as there is evidence that it is safe, and the manufacturer provides ongoing data to confirm the safety of the technology. In the case of the Zeiss Mel 80 and Bausch & Lomb Technolas 217 laser, they both have passed the stringent requirements set by Health Canada.
In general, new and safe laser technologies become available in Canada before they do so in the United States. For example, Laservue introduced the Bausch & Lomb 217 small spot scanning laser to North America in 1996. The first small spot scanning laser to be approved by the FDA was the Ladarvision laser in May 2000.
