After your laser surgery

4 to 5 hours after the surgery:

  • It is important to keep your eyes gently closed and to blink often (every 1-2 minutes) to lubricate your eyes.
  • The best is to rest but don’t sleep.
  • It is normal to feel some burning, tearing and foreign body sensation.
  • The sensation is like having soap or sand in your eyes or like peeling onions.

More than 4 to 5 hours after the surgery:

  • You can keep your eyes open, but we ask you to avoid any strenuous visual activities (like watching TV, reading or working on the computer).
  • Please notify our office if you experience sudden visual blurring and pain more than 5 hours after the surgery.

The first night after the surgery:

  • Do not touch your eyes; keep the protective shells on until the following morning.

The day after the surgery:

  • Upon waking, you can take off your shells. Please don’t throw them away because you will need them for the next four nights.
  • The next morning follow-up appointment is very important and is given between 8 :00 and 8 :30am. You will be given instructions, as well as some eye drops.
  • You can take a shower but you should avoid having the shower jets straight on your face. You can have the water on your head and run down your face.
  • The vast majority of people can go back to work or drive the day after surgery.

The following days :

  • For a total of 4 nights, place the protective shells with clear scotch tape.
  • Do not wear makeup for 3-4 days. Following this period, avoid rubbing when removing your eye makeup for a few weeks.
  • No mascara for 1 week and following this period, avoid rubbing when removing your eye makeup for a few weeks
  • For the first few weeks, don’t rub your eyes.

Common symptoms lasting an average of 3 to 6 weeks:

  • Dryness: the first couple of weeks, you may need artificial tears 4-5 times a day. After, at least morning and night, and when needed.
  • Foggy or fluctuating vision: clears gradually over a few weeks.

IMPORTANT:

Please think of changing the restriction on your driver’s license. We can sign a form for you which you can forward to the license bureau.
